For the Chinese,Shanghai and shopping are synonymous. The millions that descend on Shanghai from all over China will find their way to Nanjing Road, China’s number one shopping street. Known as the “Great White Way” in the 1930s, It housed China’s first department stores and exclusive shop and depicted a modernity hitherto unknown in China.
 
 
 
Central Huaihai Road
 
The former Avenue Joffre, the most classic avenue in the center of the old French Concession, grew up in the 1920s and formerly hosted a large Russian population. It still retains its shopping supremacy as today’s Central Huaihai Road. Much old world dignified charm remains amidst some of the most modern shopping plazas, boutiques stores in China.
 
 
Xu Jiahui
 
The area, formerly on the western fringes of the French Concession and noted for its Jesuit heritage, has emerged as a top shopping and commercial district since the mid-1990s. A cluster of huge malls are to found at the Zhaojiabang Road intersection, namely the Grand Gateway, the Orient, the No 6 Department Store and the Huijing Department Store. Again the stores are laden with consumer products of all descriptions and offer numerous opportunities for recreation and eating. This is also a good place to buy high-teach and computer equipments. A huge underground mart is located inside the Xujiahui metro stop.
 
 
Pudong New District
 
Keeping up with its grand ambitious, Pudong New District has some of the largest stores in Asia. On the intersection of Zhangyang Road and Laoshan Road, there are two magnificent mega-malls including Times Square and the Japanese-invested Next Age (Ba Bai Ban). The latter claims to be the largest in Asia and second only to Macy’s in New York. Right in the centre of the Lujiazui area, the Thai-invested Super Brand Mall opened in 2002, but its basement hypermarket has proves more of a pull than many its smaller fashion outlets. 
 
 
Yu Garden Bazaar
 
If modern Shanghai seems too similar, then you head for the bustling and jostling “China town” area around the YU Garden. Little is left from the early days, but the ever-expanding bazaar area has been splendidly stocked with Ming and Qing dynasty style. The stores and small shops offering a feast of Chinese hand crafts, local food, fashions and copy goods. The bazaar area is a bustling and colorful attraction in its own right drawing in hundreds of thousands of visitors each day and over one million during holiday and festival times. Be prepared to bargain and politely refuse unsolicited offers to view “art galleries” or “antiques”.

All manner of designer labels make their mark in these malls-Alfred Dunhill, Lagerfeld, Givenchy, Max Mara, Hugo boss, Prada, Versace and many more. There are numerous food outlets as well with a large Shanghai cuisine restaurant in Plaza 66 and a Starbuck’s in CITIC Square.
 
 
Taobao City
 
Located on the Nanjing Road, West, Taobao City is a real mart based on the No.1 B2C online sales website in China. The whole mart covers an area of 12,000 sq. m. which can only ran by the online sales suppliers on www. taobao.com. It is a great combination of the virtual and real stores for the first time ever.
 
In the three-floor building, there are over 300 individual stores. The first floor is full of sun glasses and decoration accessories. The second floor mainly focuses on clothes including under dress, sleeping and swimming clothes. The third floor is hot for the copied bags with the latest fashion style. Nowadays, it is popular among foreigners and local people.

Taikang Road Art Stores
 
Taikang Road is full of art studio and young fresh designers. They are all independent artists who create original and distinctive works. All of the art work is open for public. You can choose to buy or reserve a work, or simply come by to look. This street is pretty bleak in the morning. The best times to come by are between 2pm and 6pm.
 
Changle Road
 
People come to Changle Road to buy Chinese cheongsam dresses and ceremonial outfits. This Street has so many cheongsam tailors that it may be difficult for you to get your bearing art first. From materials to tailoring, to the elderly women watching the store, these stores all have a very local feel. Other stores on Changle Road sell blue prints, art work, and country style furniture. Bars can be seen here and there on the street, and little stately boutiques can be found nearby. There is also rather a large concentration of stores selling antiques.
