The Institute of Su Zhou Embroidery    


The Institute is located in the Mountain Villa of Secluded Beauty, a famous garden in Suzhou, noted for its elegant architecture and beautiful scenery, where the art of gardening and that of embroidery smoothly complement each other. It is a state key unit open to foreign travelers. Established in 1957, it now has over 100 specialized; experts including Chinese master craftsmen, senior craftsmen, and highly qualified artists, etc.


Suzhou embroidery, with its long history, is characterized by beautiful pattern, elegant colors, and rich and meticulous stitching. Since its establishment, the Institute has inherited and carried forward this fine tradition and created numerous new works. Representative include "Kitten", "Goldfish", "Landscape", "Portrait", etc.. Institute works have won numerous awards such as the "Gold Cup at the Chinese Arts and Crafts Hundred-Flowers Award", "Gold Medal at the 56th Poznan International Exhibition", etc.. Our embroidered works are loved by domestic and foreign friends and have won the reputation of being an "oriental pearl".


With the economic reform and opening to the outside world of recent years, the Institute has made efforts to adjust the style of our embroideries and raise the artistic content of our works. New exploration and creation has been carried out in the area of subject matter, form of expression, technical methods, etc. and great achievements have been made. Such new style works include "Splashed-in Lotus", "Yulan Magnolia" , and others created in cooperation with Prof . Yuang Yunfu of the Chinese Central Art and Crafts Institute, "Daiwei Flower" and "Spring Peonies", created in cooperation with Prof. Chang Shanna , and especially "Bubbling Pond" , and "Cedar" works developed in cooperation with a famous American photographer. These works all effectively combine traditional craftsmanship with modern themes, technique and artistic expression. They provide a felicitous mixture of Oriental and Western cultures. Traditional Suzhou embroidery has thus made a historic leap forward . Whilst , improvements in setting , frame and mounting have also been made.
 
Suzhou embroideries have been presented to state leaders on over 80 occasions, and have been exhibited in over 120 countries.Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute is an organization that combines scientific research, artistic work and sales, and enjoys the right to import and export directly.
