Heavenly Horse

Located to She Shan’s southwest, Tianma Shan is the largest and tallest mountain among She Shan’s twelve peak mountain range and at 99.8 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in the greater Shanghai area. The only thing that Tianma Shan lacks is notoriety. in ancient times, tianma Shan was called Gan Shan, and according to legend, during the Spring and Autumn Period the Wu Kingdom’s famed weapon smith, Gan jiang, forged a mighty sword here. Afterwards, the name “Tianma Shan” became popular due to the mountain’s shape – resembling a heavenly horse stretching out its wings. Tianma Shan was once a famous Buddhist location, and today, the mountain is still dotted with Fangong Buddhist Temples, During the spring time and the first fifteenth days od the agricultural New Year, pilgrims climb the mountain to burn incense in the temples. it is therefore no surprise that Tianma Shan is also called “incense Mountain.”
