  For many centuries, the beautiful Mountain Mekong region was linked by the Tea-and-Horse Trail, a trading route that stretched from Tibet, down through Yunnan province, and into the hill country of Burma and Thailand.

 

  Traders on the Tea-and-Horse Trail carried tea to Tibet, and brought horses south to Yunnan, Burma and Thailand. And along the trail flowed the regional cuisines: coconut milk, lemon grass, chili peppers, curries and pu-er tea from Thailand and Burma, exotic mushrooms and native plants and pickled vegetables and legumes from Yunnan, and cheese and potatoes and smoked meat from Tibet. The result was Mountain Mekong cuisine, a rich blend of ingredients and preparations that cannot be found anywhere else --- except in the dining rooms of the Lost Heaven Restaurant group.

  Nestled in the sprawling Dingxiang Huayuan, a residence and garden built by the Qing Dynasty military commander Li Hongzhang for his eponymous concubine Ding Xiang, this two-story restaurant-in-a-mansion is often cited as one of the city's best bets for a dim sum brunch primarily because of its lovely garden setting. The usual dim sum suspects are all here, with notables being the steamed shrimp dumplings, the barbecue pork cake, the parsley ravioli, and the preserved egg and pork congee. For dinner, there's plenty of fresh seafood, including steamed bean curd with shrimps and silverfish, and fat green crab with mashed garlic and ginger sauce.   Du Yuesheng was one of early twentieth century Shanghai’s most legendary figure. Du Yuesheng managed to grab a foothold on this “Paradise of foreign travelers” and eventually become the leader of Shanghai’s organized crime syndicates. This two storey garden residence was Du Yuesheng’s gift to his fourth wife, though it has been converted into an upscale Chinese restaurant.
