As two popular designs in architecture of 1930s in Shanghai, Art Deco is more used in fancy and expensive office buildings and private villa houses, while the other one, Stone Arched Houses, (Shikumen in Chinese), is more for local people’s daily life. Both of the two often stand next to each other everywhere in Shanghai, seeing those makes——shanghai style.

　　Let’s pick up some of the wonderful cases and make a good shot for your camera.

 

 

　　The tour starts with Rockbund - the root of whole Bund history, typically located with some Art Deco architecture, and several of H.D.Hudec, who is the top one that is talked whenever Art Deco is mentioned in Shanghai 1930s.

 

　　Take a stop at Park Hotel, another show piece of Hudec, the building has a long history in shanghai, almost stand as emblem of shanghai in 1930s. An exhibition of telling Art Deco building histories is available in Park Hotel as well.

 

　　Then continue to visit Xinhua Road——a small area but famous for quite a few villa houses in different style, designed by H.D. Hudec again.

 

　　After lunch, continue the tour of learning about Shikumen Houses——life cradles for every local Shanghainese. Walk in Xintiandi area; see the changes after the renovation, and more interesting to visit Open House Museum, where you will learn almost everything about Shikumen houses and the life in those houses everyday.

 

　　Continue to visit another typical area for Shikumen houses, Taikang Road which is more original than Xintiandi, and less commercial.
